EMIC‐Wave Driven Electron Precipitation Observed by CALET on the International Space Station

چکیده

We present an analysis of the relativistic electron precipitation (REP) event measured by CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) experiment on board International Space Station during a relatively weak geomagnetic storm 31 December 2016. CALET observations were compared with measurements Van Allen Probes in near-equatorial plane to investigate global radiation belt dynamics and REP drivers. The magnetically conjugate from these two missions demonstrate that significant MeV directly detected low-Earth orbit period depletion following passage high-speed stream, was associated dusk-side electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. In addition, combined wave, trapped data suggest reported can be likely ascribed concomitant loss effects EMIC wave scattering driving atmospheric precipitation, as well outward radial diffusion magnetopause shadowing.

The relativistic solar particle event of May 17th, 2012 observed on board the International Space Station

High-energy charged particles represent a severe radiation risk for astronauts and spacecrafts and could damage ground critical infrastructures related to space services. Different natural sources are the origin of these particles, among them galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles and particles trapped in radiation belts. Solar particle events (SPE) consist in the emission of high-ener...

The ALTCRISS project on board the International Space Station

The Altcriss project aims to perform a long term survey of the radiation environment on board the International Space Station. Measurements are being performed with active and passive devices in different locations and orientations of the Russian segment of the station. The goal is perform a detailed evaluation of the differences in particle fluence and nuclear composition due to different shie...

Cultural factors and the International Space Station.

The American and Russian/Soviet space programs independently uncovered psychosocial risks inherent in long-duration space missions. Now that these two countries are working together on the International Space Station (ISS), American-Russian cultural differences pose an additional set of risk factors. These may echo cultural differences that have been observed in the general population of the tw...

Utilization of the International Space Station as

We have conducted an initial set of tests to examine how astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) can remotely operate a planetary rover. These tests, called “Surface Telerobotics”, were designed to simulate a possible future lunar exploration mission, in which astronauts inside the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) use a surface robot to remotely explore the lunar far side fro...

The International Space Station at risk.

H uman space exploration is in deep trouble. The challenge is to maintain momentum , visibility, and funding just when the public and the U.S. Congress are preoccupied with problems of security and economic recovery. President Bush's budget request for 2003 cuts funding for the International Space Station (ISS) vehicle and operations and would eliminate its costly Crew Return Vehicle, meant for...
